What an Irish company website must show by law

What Irish company websites must show

Short answer · updated 2026-09-22

The company details Irish law requires on a limited company’s website and emails, with the sources, in one list.

Under the Companies Act 2014, section 151

A company’s website must show, in a prominent and easily accessible place:

  • the company’s legal name
  • its legal form, for example a private company limited by shares
  • the place of registration (Ireland)
  • its company registration number
  • the address of its registered office

The same details belong on business letters, order forms and emails. Breach is a category 4 offence. Most companies put them in the website footer.

Under the E-Commerce Regulations (S.I. No. 68/2003), regulation 7

A business that provides services online must also make these easily, directly and permanently accessible:

  • its name and the geographic address where it is established
  • contact details, including an email address
  • the trade register it is on and its registration number
  • its VAT number, where it has one
  • for a regulated profession, the professional body, the professional title and a reference to the professional rules

A quick check

  • Open your website’s footer and your email signature. If either is missing the legal name, the company number or the registered office, add them.
  • This is general information, not legal advice; for your own situation, ask a solicitor.
