Why does a small business need a professional website?

Why your business needs a website

Short answer · updated 2026-09-30

Customers check a business online before they call or visit.

  • Your Google profile, reviews and AI assistants all send people to your website to confirm who you are.
  • A site you own stays up whatever a social platform decides. It can take enquiries and bookings at any hour, from a page you control.

Customers look you up first

  • The CSO says 92% of Irish internet users looked up goods and services online in 2025.
  • The CSO also found 95% of people aged 16 and over had been online in the previous three months.
  • In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of US consumers, 97% read reviews for local businesses.
  • After reading positive reviews, 54% of them then checked the business’s website. In 2019 it was 32%.
  • A second BrightLocal survey, in June 2026, found 75% of US consumers choose a local business within 30 minutes.

The review and search figures are from the US. We found no Irish or UK survey that asks the same questions.

Google and AI assistants send people to your site

  • Your Google Business Profile links to your website, so your site is one tap from your listing.
  • Google’s AI answers draw on pages in its normal search index. Your site is part of what they read.
  • BrightLocal found 45% of US consumers used AI tools to find local businesses in 2026. A year earlier it was 6%.
  • It also found 88% of them fact-check the reviews those tools cite.

A site you own, not a page you rent

  • A social media page belongs to the platform. Facebook’s own help centre says Pages may be taken down or limited if they break its Community Standards.
  • It also says a Page with no active admin with full control is deactivated.
  • Your domain name and your website are yours. You can move them to a new host and keep the same address.
  • Use social media to reach people, and your website as the place they can always find you.

What makes people choose you

BrightLocal asked US consumers in 2026 what decided which local business they contacted. The top answers were:

  • clear and complete information, such as hours, address and phone number (32%)
  • the best or most reviews (30%)
  • clear pricing (29%)
  • A professional-looking website came ninth of eleven, at 20%. So “professional” here means clear, complete and current, more than polished.
  • Our signs of a good website turn that into a checklist.

It works when you don’t

  • A website answers the same questions at midnight as at noon. It says what you do, where you are, what it costs and how to book.
  • A form or booking page can take enquiries while you’re working, and you reply when you’re free.

What a bad website costs

  • Wrong opening hours send customers to a locked door.
  • A phone number that doesn’t dial when tapped loses the call.
  • A contact form that fails quietly loses every enquiry until someone notices.
  • A site without https is marked “Not secure”. Google has said Chrome 154, due in October 2026, will warn before opening such pages.

Common questions

Isn’t a Facebook page enough?

It helps, but you don’t control it. Facebook says Pages can be taken down or limited, and not every customer uses Facebook.

Keep the page, and link it to a website you own.

Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?

Yes. The profile links to your website, and customers use it to check you out.

In BrightLocal’s 2026 US survey, 54% checked a business’s website after reading positive reviews.

How much does a website cost?

Published Irish price guides put a small-business site at about €700 to €2,500 from a freelancer or small studio.

Our guide to website costs in Ireland has the detail and the sources.

What makes a website look professional?

Clear, complete and current information comes first: what you do, where, your hours, prices and phone number.

Then it should work on a phone, show a padlock and load quickly.

What we charge

A new website is €499, with 12 months of hosting and Care included. After that, Care is €20 a month. See prices, or tell us what you need.
